Community Mural Unveiled at Merrifield
MAB is excited to announce the completion of a new mural at the Merrifield Recreation Reserve Pavilion.
This project was a collaborative effort, with the final design shaped by a community engagement process. Local Merrifield residents were presented with two design concepts and were encouraged to select their preferred based on which best reflected Merrifield’s identity, values and aspirations. The selected mural was created by artist Melanie Caple and draws inspiration from the passion of the Merrifield Panthers, with the club’s strong commitment to its community at the heart of the design.
The mural seamlessly bridges the natural and built environments, celebrating a strong sense of place while introducing moments of urban beauty for the local community. The artwork features softly lit rubber plant sprigs, a nod to a much-loved feature of many local homes, alongside dried river red gum leaves, an iconic eucalyptus species native to the Mickleham region. Red-rumped parrots, a familiar and cherished sight across Melbourne’s suburban sporting grounds, bring further life to the composition. These natural elements are brought together with teal accents referencing the Merrifield Panthers, complemented by the club’s iconic claw marks, proudly worn on their uniform.
Painted directly onto the pavilion wall, the mural transforms everyday infrastructure into a vibrant reflection of Merrifield through colour and texture. Beyond enhancing the area’s visual appeal and helping to deter graffiti, the artwork pays homage to the Pavilion’s home club, the Merrifield Panthers, while showcasing elements of Merrifield that residents recognise as home.
MAB recognises the support of Hume City Council in bringing this wonderful project to life.
